One of the commonest questions we get asked in the trade is why sparkys can also be called both an electrical contractor or an electrician. The simple answer is that one of the terms refers to a single sparky and the other one refers to a business that employs sparkys.

An electrical contractor is a business person or company that employs electricians and that performs specialized construction work related to the design, installation, and maintenance of electrical systems.

An electrician is an individual tradesman who may work for an electrical contractor, or directly for individuals or companies.

Both electricians and electrical contractors hold licenses and insurances to properly and safely operate a business, which means the employees and home owners/business owners are protected from insurance liabilities. These requirements vary from state to state.
