Solar Panels – what you need to know
With the escalating cost of electricity, consumers across Australia are looking for ways to save money on their powerbill.
However, with the abundance of choices and schemes in place to incorporate renewable energy technologies into your home, the renewable energy landscape is fast becoming a complex arena.
What technology is really going to give you the best return on your investment both in the short and long term?
The quick answer is every property is different. It depends on when and how you use your energy. The best way to find out is to engage a specialist energy auditor who can provide you with a detailed assessment of your property and provide recommendations that will have an immediate impact.
Who can I contact for the detailed audit?
A Master Electrician is the best person to perform your energy audit assessment as every Master Electrician has been trained to provide specific energy efficient solutions as a holistic approach. Simply visit www.masterelectricians.com.au and click on ‘find a master electrician’ link.
I’m interested in solar panels, how do they work?
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) panels generate clean electricity by converting the energy in sunlight into energy you can use in your home. The solar PV panels are generally fitted on the roof in a northerly direction at an angle to maximise the amount of sunlight that hits the panels. From there, electricity is captured by
heavy duty wires and fed back into a box called an inverter which transforms the energy into a format that is usable in the home.
So are solar panels the best choice for me?
Solar panels can save you money in one of two ways. They can help to reduce your energy usage which will equate to a reduction in your powerbill, or they can produce excess electricity (Renewable Energy Credits) which you can feed back in the electricity grid for a tariff. Every state has a different system in place for feed-in tariffs, for the latest information you can visit www.energymatters.com.au.

Master Electricians urges home owners to switch to safer thinking
Home owners are being urged to check their electrical safety as the country gears up for summer.
Andrew Bailey from Master Electricians Australia said there was a risk of fire or electric shock, particularly in older homes, as a result of electrical fittings deteriorating over time.
He urged all home owners to ensure they had safety switches installed, and for those with homes over 20 years old to have their wiring inspected by a qualified contractor.
Mr Bailey along with Group General Manager Malcolm Richard and State Manager for Victoria Carl Rankin are visiting different locations across the country as part of the Master Electricians Australia's national roadshow this month, which highlights the latest innovations in safety and technology to the electrical industry.
“Australians need to start thinking about electrical safety in the home,” Mr Bailey said. “Most people are unaware they’re not properly protected.”
“The number of people killed or injured in electrical accidents in Australian homes each year is astounding, and many lives could have been saved if a simple safety switch was fitted.
“Around 40 per cent of Australian homes remain completely unprotected, while some people have made the mistake of assuming a circuit breaker has the same function as a safety switch.”
He called on the owners of homes more than two decades old to have their wiring checked urgently, in order to ensure their safety.
“The risk of fire or electric shock is greater in older homes, where insulation has perished over time or been damaged by rats and mice in the roof space.
“Switch to safer thinking by calling a local Master Electrician or licensed electrical contractor to arrange an inspection and a quote to make sure you and your family are safe.”
